' }+ Z6 w) u% t* ydublin-based practice architecture republic has recently completed 'formwork', an artist's studio located next to an established 7 K0 D! v" r3 K
residence in dublin, ireland. the nature of the client's artwork required an open area and the ability to view from an overhead
$ S6 ^" X4 _% s" u$ d2 \perspective. a garden buffer marks a distinction between the public passage leading to the private workshop. the footprint of
$ G: i6 K9 X- a( S7 e/ [( Wthe 5 meter by 5 meter structure is situated between and bounded by the plot's extents. 7 V) i1 e4 I# Z1 W6 y' n* ?

# [' B% q/ K$ Ythe finished floor elevation has been recessed 750mm, approximately the height of a desk surface. the artist lays canvases on ) e4 Z& R' r& p8 `( p, z! D7 g* b
the ground and may view the progress of work from a perimeter path placed at 'ground level'. while standing upon the poured # x' g: _3 L. W. p- r$ L
in place concrete ledge, the ceiling is 2.4 meters high and rises to 3.15 meters upon descending into the center of the room. / t8 T" |1 ]' I3 L
the monolithic ribbon element bends to form the entry staircase, raised work surface and daybed. the polished finish contrasts
9 O1 U* D# d( `$ ethe uniform texture of the board-marked floor to roof concrete walls. ) R8 \ Q$ C# T( O' e- t; P
, k6 V; u( T* q7 x+ k4 xtwo strip skylights oriented on a north-south axis introduce the shifting lighting conditions throughout the day. horizontal bands
9 H4 L# \ X( A# z+ hof windows at the base of the enclosure provide views of the surrounding landscape from a seated position while the expansive 1 ?5 f! P$ f) Z6 R. u
and continuous area above is used to exhibit large artworks.7 f1 r! r* Y, C
