( T: n5 H$ L; e; J" edublin-based practice architecture republic has recently completed 'formwork', an artist's studio located next to an established 9 w; t  H4 S, f! e7 r. k
residence in dublin, ireland. the nature of the client's artwork required an open area and the ability to view from an overhead
: J. [5 g. i+ M7 T: fperspective. a garden buffer marks a distinction between the public passage leading to the private workshop. the footprint of % w: D$ s5 G- X# A2 ]& W% ]! W( u
the 5 meter by 5 meter structure is situated between and bounded by the plot's extents. 9 C5 R9 E8 |2 M' x: j( A

" ?6 S) E0 v' sthe finished floor elevation has been recessed 750mm, approximately the height of a desk surface. the artist lays canvases on
4 R( b5 P9 i+ E$ Dthe ground and may view the progress of work from a perimeter path placed at 'ground level'. while standing upon the poured
& J- {. B) O3 D0 Kin place concrete ledge, the ceiling is 2.4 meters high and rises to 3.15 meters upon descending into the center of the room.
7 i, ?4 G; F; I% j; E6 d# f" G" lthe monolithic ribbon element bends to form the entry staircase, raised work surface and daybed. the polished finish contrasts 3 L  ~5 s, ?0 e  l
the uniform texture of the board-marked floor to roof concrete walls. ( p1 K: M" J3 j& _* V/ [2 y5 a) G

+ u) y5 s! j1 H9 C4 |3 |two strip skylights oriented on a north-south axis introduce the shifting lighting conditions throughout the day. horizontal bands # M6 k" B! N6 R1 U7 E
of windows at the base of the enclosure provide views of the surrounding landscape from a seated position while the expansive 9 b- {$ }  P" _, t
and continuous area above is used to exhibit large artworks.
