dublin-based practice architecture republic has recently completed 'formwork', an artist's studio located next to an established * f# e( ]0 k& _) f9 w% W+ D
residence in dublin, ireland. the nature of the client's artwork required an open area and the ability to view from an overhead 4 V: k j& c" Q( K `0 n
perspective. a garden buffer marks a distinction between the public passage leading to the private workshop. the footprint of 4 \! }% D& v3 R" V
the 5 meter by 5 meter structure is situated between and bounded by the plot's extents.

the finished floor elevation has been recessed 750mm, approximately the height of a desk surface. the artist lays canvases on ! w, L$ N# f! \" S: h$ _# Y6 @0 q+ x
the ground and may view the progress of work from a perimeter path placed at 'ground level'. while standing upon the poured ( q7 v* T. q8 W2 h: A
in place concrete ledge, the ceiling is 2.4 meters high and rises to 3.15 meters upon descending into the center of the room.
/ X- n) v& N; [5 m& Mthe monolithic ribbon element bends to form the entry staircase, raised work surface and daybed. the polished finish contrasts * f9 |, v( w$ J( Y& t+ {
the uniform texture of the board-marked floor to roof concrete walls. ! `0 u4 z# U* s) _6 r W
! ^' q$ L# i5 d* i% Q1 A btwo strip skylights oriented on a north-south axis introduce the shifting lighting conditions throughout the day. horizontal bands . R- L5 P$ \2 K( M" F/ N
of windows at the base of the enclosure provide views of the surrounding landscape from a seated position while the expansive
' V* n- `: A2 ]1 y8 hand continuous area above is used to exhibit large artworks.
